Do you know what’s attractive? The youthfulness, the dazzle in someone’s eyes, just a bright, expressive person. Yeah, and clothes help for sure. When I think about all the people that made me smile and dream as a kid, I think Mary Kate and Ashely Olsen, ‘will’ from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, ‘TLC from no Scrubs’ and as a teenager ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ from Sex and the city. You see them, and you think ‘damn that that outfit is fabulous!’, but you also think ‘Damn they look fabulous in that outfit’. How so?. They’re just charming, charismatic and funny but most importantly it’s ‘them’.

Just loosen up a little, be young again. Because it’s time to revisit some of our back to school fashion icons from the ’90s.
1. You wear the outfit. The outfit doesn’t wear you.
That’s the number one rule. You’re not a clothing hanger; you’re all flesh, bones and soul looking fantastic with or without a gorgeous get up. So ‘confidence’ it is. Does Carrie Bradshaw wear the floaty floral dress, or does it wear her?. Make sure what you are wearing is you. We don’t dress to impress; we dress to feel beautiful and vibrant for us.

2. Don’t be afraid to match clothes
Trust me; you can pull it off. It’s quirky, it’s cute, and it’s very appealing. And you’ll definitely stand out if that’s what you’re going for. Maybe start by matching accessories with dresses or matching two-piece clothing. Hair scrunchies and tops work well too, and it brings out a youthful appearance. Maybe watch a couple of Mary Kate and Ashley movies, notice their choices in clothing. Very chic, very vibrant and not afraid of colours. It’s got that mix of 90’s edgy and 2000’s girly.
3. Accessorise
Accessorise, Accessorize, Accessorize!.

It gives your look that extra oomph. You could style it up with some colored shades, hoop earrings, chunky rings or even hats. Don’t be afraid to go bold with the accessories if your clothes are more minimalistic. A little black dress always goes well with chunky gold jewellery. The ’90s were all about accessories, and admit it, corny as it seems..it did look pretty hot, even in Hannah Montana. You could pair some Black Stockings with a latex/ leather skirt. Maybe some hoop earrings with a halter; that could accentuate your shoulders, especially if you pull back your hair in a ponytail or bun. Think about it. All your favourite fashionistas from when you were a kid…did they accessorise?.

4. Colours and prints add character
Not everyone likes dressing in prints or colours. But it’s essential to establish that when you see yourself in the mirror and say ‘ this colour does not look flattering with my skin complexion’ remember …that’s bullshit. Yes, it’s very accurate. Some colours go well with certain skin tones such as red or gold with tan skin and blues and pinks with cooler-toned skin, while neutral go with all. But don’t be afraid to try something out of your comfort zone because that is very attractive. ‘ Prints’ add character. If you don’t like florals or polka ( which I don’t myself), try switching it up sometimes with Graphic tees. It’s fresh, fun and makes you seem a lot more approachable and easygoing. No, it doesn’t mean you’re lazy; it means you got that ‘chill vibe’. You can never go wrong with that.
5. Hair is a game-changer
Hair is a big part of the whole look. And it can also be the hardest to style sometimes. A cute ponytail goes super well with halters, V necks and off shoulders. Try new hairdos, check out some styles on Pinterest. I’ve noticed Curly hair goes well with fitted clothes, like bodycon dresses or bodysuits with jeans. Bad hair day? You can also put your hair up in a bun and maybe pair it up with colourful bandanas, some hoop earrings and a long skirt. Colourful hair scrunchies are fresh and youthful, use hair clips or clutches instead- it holds your hair without harsh pulling. It’s also high time we bring back the thin corner braids from the early 2000s, hella cute. It’s 2020, the year of the quarantine, styling can get tough. If you cut your hair into ugly bangs, you can always pin them back and oomph to the rest of your hair. Some reliable everyday hair products that are a must-have
- Hairspray
- Dry shampoo
- Garnier Flat iron spray
- Argon oil
- Hair mousse for curly hair
- Coconut oil
